“Wow,” said Smith, Greenville High’s boys track coach. “This is amazing. It’s tangible now. I can go home.” All the Greenville boys were able to go home Friday with the knowledge that they were the best in Greenville County, having won the boys portion of the 2010 county meet at Eastside High School. The girls meet presented a recurring theme, as J.L. Mann was victorious for the sixth consecutive season. Greenville’s boys earned a narrow victory over Wade Hampton, 305-293.5. Riverside was third with 255.
The Raiders were particularly strong in the field events. After Jevonte Hill won the long jump (21 feet, 3 inches) on Thursday, Shai Carpenter (47-5.5) and James Smith (142-5.5) won the triple jump and the discus, respectively, on Friday.
Greenville also had a first place finish from its 400-meter relay team.
“It means a lot to the program,” Tim Smith said. “We’re in the process of rebuilding, and I think now our program is getting to the point where we’re gonna have a lot more kids coming out for track and field. Our program is just gonna blossom from here.”
Greenville’s Sandi Morris broke her own meet record in the pole vault by leaping 12-6, and she added a victory in the 110 hurdles (15.00).
